Osteopathic medical students major in any discipline without adversely affecting admission to a D.O. program. There are some basic academic requirements for admission to most U.S. osteopathic medical schools.
Some schools may have additional course requirements such as biochemistry or advanced level biology courses. Always refer to individual osteopathic medical school web sites for their specific requirements. The information is also available in the Osteopathic Medical College Information Book (PDF).
Advanced Placement courses and/or Acceleration Credits generally do not satisfy requirements for admission to medical school, but are used to elect advanced courses in those subject areas.
Ideally, since the osteopathic medical schools will judge you on the basis of the work you have completed when you apply for admission, the majority of prerequisite courses should be completed by the time of application.
