Choosing Medical Schools

Choosing medical schools to which you apply is a personal decision, so relying on any rankings you find may be misleading. Questions to consider as you review schools’ material:

  • Do I prefer a small or large school? Do I like a large class or a small class?
  • Am I interested in a career in research, in clinical practice, in academic medicine?
  • Which schools have a learning approach that emphasizes primary care, patient education, prevention, and preparation for community practice? What schools have a teaching approach that will work well for me? Pass/Fail grades?
  • Where is the school located – urban, suburban, rural?  What are the options for clinical rotations?
  • What types of financial aid are available at the schools I am considering?

Yale College Alumni Medical School Surveys

Each year we ask our alumni who are currently in their first year of medical school to complete a survey detailing their experiences thus far.
